A Gathering of Flowers - Finches Lane's Cottage Garden Florilegium

Updated: Mar 1

Today I would like to introduce you to …

The Cottage Garden Florilegium - The beginning of the year 2024

A close up photo of a patch of snowdrops growing under a contorted hazel bush. The sky is blue.

Hello dear friends,

Will you do me a favour?

I know it’s a lot to ask… but would you take a look through your smart phone and see what you have most photos of? It’s so interesting to see what catches our eye, what we want to immortalise forever!

Two women walking along a sandy beach with the blue sky reflected in the water.

I did this myself recently and, aside from the obligatory family holiday snaps and plenty of my three fluffy dogs, the thing that I photograph the most is flora.

A bichon frise, havanese and coton de Tulear dogs looking left and seemingly begging for food.

It’s not a surprise to anyone who knows me,  I love anything flora and fauna. My camera roll has literally hundreds and hundreds of photos of flowers, mushrooms, shrubs and trees, with the occasional moss and lichen.

15 square photos from a smartphone camera roll showing different flowers including roses, tulips and a purple bunch of chrysanthemums.

I am so inspired by the beauty of the natural world, especially the plants that surround me here in the south of England, and all my art has been created using the 'gathering of flowers' photos I take and curate.

It is so important to me that you know nothing in the Finches Lane Portfolio has been created with artificial intelligence.  I have hand drawn every element and motif in every design I publish. Each pattern and picture is an original idea, created with imagination and lots of love and care. And all my photos are an important part of my creative process!

Two red hedge roses with bright orange centres with 3 rose buds surrounding them. An example of a digital drawing.

With all that said, I think that it's always good to start a new season with a sort out and I’m determined to rearrange and organise my photographs to inspire more beautiful patterns.

So, I’ve decided to share them with you all in this series of blogs. I love researching and learning about the different plants from the cottage gardens to the delicate wild flowers, it seems to inspire the artwork even more. I also love talking to you, sharing my love for the beautiful world around us. It’s a win-win!

So begins the Finches Lane Florilegium.

A close up of the white 5 petaled hawthorn flower. The background is dark branches and a sunny winter day.

A Florilegium literally means a gathering of flowers, which seems like the perfect title for the project.

I hope you enjoy my  photos and the stories that surround them. And, if you have any stunning photos that you want me to add, do send them over and I’ll publish them with the next addition.

Oh and also if you have captured a stunning flower, tree or shrub that you want to challenge me to create into a pattern, I’d love to see them too.

Love and heaps of blessings,

Tori
