Pattern Inspiration | Apothecary Rose

Updated: Aug 22

One of my local National Trust houses has a stunning display of roses every year. They are all grown in two delightful walled gardens and grow in amongst foxgloves, irises, lavender and so many other cottage garden flowers.

Hidden in the corner of one of the gardens is an ancient rose bush that inspied this pattern and the illustration that accompanies her.

"The Rosa Gallica is a very old friend to the Cottage garden. There are 300 species of Rose and she is the oldest, often grown by the ancient greeks as a medicinal botanical rather than for her beauty. After wandering around the walled garden of a National Trust property in the early summer months, we could hear her before we saw her as not only does she provide medicinal benefits she also was feeding so many variety of bees. Such an inspiration to paint. The print is created with digital oil paints to give the petals a sheen to them. If you would like this precious rose print to accompany you in your space lie it has done for thousands of years do let us know."
