Discover the Beauty of Aquilegia in the Finches Lane Wildflower Florilegium of Britain and Ireland

Updated: Jun 5

A photo of a small 4 petaled white flower with simple green leaves
Aquilegia vulgaris

Identifying features:

Seen from May and June growing in hedgerows, edges of woods and flower borders.

The flowers look like little bonnets or chandeliers and "the Wildlife Trust' describes the distribution as widespread but never common!

The 5 petals have a long spur and they hang down in a bell shape and they attract different pollinators.

Family - Ranunculaceae

Note:

The flower could be named after the latn words for an eagle, or water, or lastly doves with columba being Latin for dove.

If you see the purple ones in the wild then they are the original wildflower, other colours are garden escapees.
